3/8/12 Meeting Report

1. The meeting started off with a little surprise for Julie. Her husband conspired with the Quilt Barn ladies and a birthday present to make anyone jealous (ok, anyone who sews) was waiting for her.

I sweetly told my husband the story. And winked. And said "hint, hint." I don't think he was convinced.

2. We're still working on charity quilts. We have a roll of batting at the quilt barn and a large stack of quilts needing to be quilting. If you have any spare time, come by and pick one up to work on. We'd love to get these done and donated to a local charity. And, the sooner we get them done, the sooner we can do prizes for those who participated!

3. March sewing night has been moved. There are some fun prom plans for this Saturday, so we will be holding sewing night on Saturday, March 24th. From 7 pm until insanely late at The Quilt Barn. Please come. Bring your projects, machine and snacks to share.

4. Block Exchange. We all showed off the Farmer's Wife quilt blocks we made for Nikke. Lovely work, ladies. Tara handed out her fabric bundles. She's asking for two granny square blocks. The tutorial is here. If you are participating, but weren't at the meeting, please make arrangements with Tara to pick up a fabric bundle.

5. Pillow swap! Look at these lovelies.

6. Our next swap will be in May. I've dubbed it the Super Spy Swap. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to find the favorite things of your swap partner. Go ahead, stalk them on filckr, facebook and pinterest. Ask their friends. Whatever it takes to find out what they like. Then, compile a box of goodies for them containing at least handmade item. If you weren't at the meeting and would like to participate, email Tara (tguisto@hotmail.com) by the end of the week.

7. Demonstration- Tara showed off her crocheted rug made from vintage sheets and told us a little bit about her methods.

If you missed it, there are a ton of tutorials online. Try here, here and here.

I think that's it. I hope to see you all on sewing night on the 24th or at our next meeting on April 12th.

Granny Squares

Have you seen the granny square inspired quilts popping up all over?

The free tutorial and more pictures of the original quilt can be found here. More granny square goodness here, here, here and here.

I, meanwhile, feel like a stick-in-the-mud, plugging away on my old fashioned crocheted granny square blanket.

When it's done, though, I may have to move onto a quilted version. Maybe even in the same colors. Wouldn't a quilt with an afghan in matching colors folded at the foot make for a fun little girl's bed? Oh! Oh, or vintage sheets. Vintage sheets would be amazing. And I just happen to have a lovely layer cake of them given to me by our amazing Tara. As you can tell, the possibilities are endless for this fun little block.

My Current Obsession

Have you seen this?

Source: flickr.com via Trina on Pinterest

I just finished a string quilt and this quilt makes my quilt want to go hide in a closet and cry. If I am very, very brave and manage to collect enough pale neutraly sort of scraps, there may be one of these in my future. The pattern is in the new issue of Fat Quarterly and can be purchased here.
Dolores of A Labour of Love is hosting a sew along of the projects from this issue. Details here.

So, what's your current obsession?

Reminder and a Little Inspiration

Late Night Sew (aka The Best Night of the Month) is tomorrow! 7 pm until they kick us out of the Quilt Barn. Bring your machine, a project or three, and snacks to share.

Now- I've got a couple of ideas for you, just in case you're looking for a new project.

Check out this blog post for a round-up of some of the awesome quilt-a-longs going on right now.

This is my current obsession.

I love this block. It's 24 inches and made entirely from half square triangles.

I definitely see a one of these in my immediate future.

Hello Ladies!

Our meeting Thursday night was, as always, fantastic! So good to see you all there. And, if you weren't there, we missed you.

We celebrated three birthdays.

Tara introduced us to the work of Kirie aka ShapeMoth. Specifically her amazing fabric flowers.

We discussed our next swap. Pillows. If you'd like to particpate, the pillows need to be at least 9" by 9" and finished by our March meeting. Email Tara (tguisto@hotmail.com) by the end of the week and she will add you to the list.

Sewing night is this Saturday, January 21st. It will start at 7 at the Quilt Barn. Bring your machine, projects to keep you busy into the wee hours and snacks to share.

I'm going to be starting a new little thing on this blog- Inspirational posts. Basically any picture or tutorial that catches my eye and I decided to share with everyone. Check back soon. My goal is at least one a week. I should have something for you in a couple of days.

And, don't forget, we have a flickr group and a facebook group. Join them both!
